and I’m going to write about it soon.
Look at this jewel I found on Tumblr:
“Hi, I would need some help. I want to go and help the poor in several countries. So, what I need is some people from the locations I want to go see, to send an ask here to answer me or message me directly giving me some towns that are rural and where there are people struggling with poverty. I need people from: New Zealand, Iceland, Norway, England, Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, Croatia, Sweden, Spain, Belgium. These are the main places i want to see but i’m open to info for other locations!Tx:)”
I don’t know where she’s from, but half of those countries have the highest standards of living in the world. At least she’s not shy about doing it for the sake of traveling.
But even in places like Africa, South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, voluntourism is really disruptive. The best way to help is to make a donation to a reputable charity. Too bad those are few and far between.
I completely agree I feel like most of the people I know who have done, or who want to do voluntorism want to do it so that they can travel and act like they’ve changed the world. I’m all for helping people less fortunate than myself but I think that we have a responsibility to do our research on how best to help those in need.
